Indications

Used for the treatment of hypertension and symptomatic heart failure. It may also be used in certain patients with asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction to help reduce the risk of developing symptomatic heart failure.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity or allergy to enalapril, any other ACE inhibitor, or any component of the formulation.
History of angioedema associated with previous ACE inhibitor therapy.
Hereditary or idiopathic angioedema.
Pregnancy.
Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes mellitus or significant renal impairment.
Concomitant use with sacubitril/valsartan, or use within 36 hours of switching between these treatments, because of the increased risk of angioedema.

Warnings and Precautions

Enalapril may cause symptomatic hypotension, particularly in patients who are volume-depleted, taking diuretics, or have heart failure.
Kidney function and serum potassium should be monitored during treatment, especially in patients with renal impairment, heart failure, renal artery stenosis, or those taking medicines that may increase potassium levels.
Hyperkalemia may occur. Use caution with potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics, and other medicines that raise serum potassium.
Angioedema involving the face, lips, tongue, throat, or airway may occur at any time during treatment. Stop the medicine and seek immediate medical attention if swelling or difficulty breathing develops.
A persistent dry cough may occur during ACE inhibitor therapy.
Use with caution in patients with renal artery stenosis because kidney function may deteriorate.
Rarely, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, or other blood abnormalities may occur, particularly in patients with renal impairment or collagen vascular disease.
ACE inhibitors can cause serious fetal injury and must not be used during pregnancy. Patients who become pregnant while taking enalapril should contact their physician promptly.
Do not discontinue or change the prescribed dose without consulting a healthcare professional.
